In 1999 I took a course in Expository Writing at the Hawaii Community College. As part of the course, I wrote a short essay about my travels through 40 countries, "Great Expectations". To my surprise, the essay won awards at local, state, and international levels.

I am currently listed as an international contributor with Plymouth Sustainability and Surfing Research Group (PSSRG), an interdisciplinary research unit comprised of international surfers and scholars. The aim of the organization is to investigate sustainable development and surfing, exploring humanity’s interaction with the environment through the lens of a wave.
My recent work with the PSSRG includes: "A systems approach – Surf resource system boundaries" published in Sustainable surfing, edited by G. Borne and J. Ponting.
